Best #OccupyWallStreet photo ever of the day.
The rich folks are only making it harder for themselves. If they keep on pissing off the 99% like this, there’s going to reach a tipping point… let’s hope the economy catastrophically fails for the 1% before that happens, though. Because then it’s likely to be like that Daniel Day-Lewis movie (I’m talking about the title, not the milkshake—the rich have already been drinking our milkshakes for quite sometime).

Some might see a crass corporate attempt to latch onto a movement that fits well with the company’s branding. We see a progressive company showing its pre-corporate roots. (via Percolate)
Why don’t these companies set up a job fair at each one of the Occupy sites?
Why don’t these companies set up a job fair? Possibly because it won’t be enough. If you take a hard look at the facts, government and the major corporations/banks are only making things worse. A B&J job fair won’t turn things around. We need major change. That’s just my ¥2, of course. I’m no economist. I’ve just been following this stuff closely for years. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to know that if you keep doing the same thing over and over and it does no good, you should probably stop doing that same thing. The USG, corps and banks aren’t stopping. Even if jobs are created, the lax regulations, the tax havens and the outsourcing will still screw the American worker, and likely the American economy, in the end.

I see tons and tons of outrage, totally legit outrage, about how cops are clocking protesters left and right. That’s all well and good. That shit needs to be publicized. It needs to stop.
But, uh. I was born and raised in NYC. Lived here all but maybe 3 years of my life. And let me tell you, NYPD does this shit every day, on a regular basis to black and brown people in this city. Errrrrrrrrryday. It is a fact of life, basically. Chris Rock was only half joking when he said in one of his HBO specials that NYPD is one of the leading causes of death for black people. I live less than 5 minutes away from where Abner Louima was arrested and less than 10 minutes away from where he was sexually assaulted viciously by cops.
What I’m seeing on the internet, which is kind of a running theme with OWS in general (and kind of why I side eye the fuck out of it despite agreeing with its sentiments and most of the intent), is what amounts to “OH SWEET JESUS, THE POLICE ARE BEATING WHITE PEOPLE, STOP THE PRESSES”. That is seriously how it’s coming across. Because, to be honest, PoC have to basically get killed or brutalized by the cops for it to even blip on people’s radar. And even then it’s like, we have to be killed or brutalized in some spectacularly heinous way for it to get any attention.
And it’s like, white people are wringing their hands and shit like, AMG I THOUGHT THE POLICE WERE OUR ~FRIENDS~, CAN THEY BE A PART OF THIS MOVEMENT OR NOT?! AMG AMG BECKY WHHHHHHHHY
And then I see some bullshit article by the Socialist Workers where they’re talking about how these motherfuckers are sitting up there appropriating Sean Bell’s name for a fuckin protest chant, the same article that invokes Slutwalk (REALLY?!?! AFTER THIS WEEK!?!?!), all talking about police brutality. Oh my god.
Really, tho? REALLY?
I quit.
Reblogging because this is an excellent bit of writing.

notyourkinddear, very good point. But I was at a bomb scare in Times Square earlier this year and the cops were actually very cool and even friendly to everyone—not just me—and the crowd was mixed with all kinds of ethnicities. I even asked a couple questions which they answered. I’m not used to cops giving me the time of day, let alone answering my questions about a supposed bomb. Usually cops give me a ticket because I was(n’t) speeding. Or because I looked at them funny. Maybe it’s not about the cops, but the setting or maybe even the framing of the dynamic? As in: they’re being told that protesters are the bad guys. They’re so psyched up about it that even that one cop was like “I hope my little night stick gets a workout.” That doesn’t sound like a cop some guy with punky hair could ask a question of and get an answer. That guy sounds like he’s been brainwashed into thinking some people aren’t human.
dumbthingswhitepplsay, really? An excellent bit of writing? Passionate, sure, emotional, definitely, but excellent it is not. What am I supposed to do with this? Where is the part where the writer says, specifically, what is wrong and what should be done? All she says is that it shouldn’t take white people being beaten up by NYPD to… uh… I’m not sure what. There’s a thing called a “thesis statement” that they teach you in “how to write an article” class. You state your point (thesis statement)) and then you back it up (the rest of the article). I know this is a blog and blogs aren’t known for winning Pulitzers, but please, don’t call it excellent when the piece doesn’t even fully make it’s point.
talldarkbishoujo, who are you mad at? I feel like it’s me and every other white American, but what did I/we do (this time)? It seems like you’re mad because police brutality is a reality that most of us aren’t aware of. You’re right to be mad. I’m completely with you, but I don’t know who you’re specifically mad at. You can’t be mad at the general public. Most of us don’t know that police brutality is as bad as it is. Can you blame them for not knowing? I don’t think so. I think it’s the media that doesn’t like to cover stories about police brutality on blacks. Hell, they don’t like to cover stories that do anything but support the bullshit, capitalistic, corporate line that keeps us all divided against each other. Hell, they didn’t even cover Occupy Wall Street for the first week and when they did they basically shit on protesters! I think it’s the media you should direct your anger at. They’re the racist ones. I think if the media showed pictures/video of the black guys who were tortured by Chicago cops over the years to their viewing audience, they’d be shocked. But what can people on the street do? Protest, which is what’s happening.
And yes, NYPD isn’t the only city with cops who practice violence on its citizens. What went on in Chicago for years was seriously messed up. I know that because I listen to Democracy Now as much as I can. Too bad everyone doesn’t.

It’s like they’re not even pretending anymore.
Rich folks need to keep talking like this. Seriously.
They need to keep talking like this so when they finally get punched in the face or their home burned to the ground, they’ll be able to blame themselves.
Aw, who am I kidding? They’ll still blame us for everything. Even though they’ve got our money (who do you think bought all those pizzas, Herman?) they still think that they don’t owe us anything, yet they still expect us to keep buying their shit (we can’t afford pizzas, anymore, Herman!).
I still think rich folks need to keep talking like this though. It’ll just speed things up more.

Yeah, this is a pretty sad state, where it takes hours for the MSM to catch up to events that were being reported on by Twitter as they happened. There’s no excuse for this, but there is an explanation—that all of our concerns, that the government is only out to protect and serve the rich and the corporations and that our rights as citizens trying to voice our own opinions, are true.
They arrested 700 people. 700! That’s just here in NYC—yesterday on the Brooklyn Bridge. I have no idea what’s happening in other cities that are doing “Occupy” style protests. If that’s not enough, the rumor as of last night was that the cops ushered protesters onto the bridge so that they could arrest them. Essentially, they were entrapped. That’s illegal. But these days, it’s no surprise when cops can get away with things that are illegal.
This is why I won’t join them. I’m simply not brave enough to risk an arrest record or the chance I might get pepper sprayed or beaten up. I don’t have health insurance, thanks to our lovely every-man-for-himself system we have. However, I’ll do whatever I can to get their word out. I hope you will too.

What’s amazing about this photograph (by David Shankbone, Mr. Coolest Last Name Ever) is the ‘Charging Bull’ sculpture was initially installed without the consent of the authorities. It’s guerilla art!
The rest of the Occupy Wall St. photos from ‘In Focus’ are equally fascinating, go check ‘em out. (And hey! There’s a rumor Radiohead might be performing for the protesters at 4pm. Woah.)

newsweek:
In what may be the most documented arrests ever, at least five Wall Street protesters were detained on Tuesday to the chants of “what’s your name!,” “fucking cowards,” and the like.
A spokesperson for the protesters writes via email:
The first arrest was a protester who objected to the police removing a tarp that was protecting our media equipment from the rain. The police said that the tarp constituted a tent, in spite of it not being a habitat in any way. Police continued pressuring protesters with extralegal tactics, saying that a protester on a bullhorn was breaking a law. The protester refused to cease exercising his first amendment rights and was also arrested. Then the police began to indiscriminately attempt to arrest protesters, many of them unsheathed their batons, in spite of the fact that the protest remained peaceful. One of the protesters received a large gash on their leg, another lost a tooth. Multiple police tackled a protester and sat on him as he continually warned them that he was experiencing an asthma attack. One of the medics on site informed the police that they needed to call an ambulance because this was a potentially fatal circumstance. They ignored him. We have no current information on this protester, but we hope that he hasn’t been murdered by the police.
One fascinating police tactic of note: the presence of officers with video cameras recording the arrests, likely to be used to defend against the inevitable accusations of brutality.
More quality reporting from Newsweek!
As someone who has been to his fair share of protests, I know first hand that cops have been shooting video of protests for years. This is less for “defending” against accusations of brutality (come on, is there a defense against batons vs. unarmed protesters?) and more for documenting who the protesters are. What I’ve read over the years about this tactic is that they want to be able to spot the career protesters and develop profiles on them over the span of many protests.
Of course, if Newsweek would stop treating their Tumblr like it’s not a legitimate method for disseminating facts, they would have done their research and known that this isn’t about defense but instead about offense.
And dig that crazy pro-government, anti-protester bias when the Newsweek Tumblrer refers to the “inevitable accusations of brutality.”
The tone of this suggests that said accusations are guaranteed to be groundless. Do these guys even try to be unbiased anymore?
It’s as if they’re quietly saying “Why don’t these protesters stop their whining about corporate corruption of government and just go home?!? Why, I’m a reporter paid by corporate media and I’m not corrupt! What are these people crying about?!?!”

About:
The idea is that all of human society is based on a power structure that enslaves the trusting/ignorant and rewards the greedy and the dishonest. From government, to business to our individual lives, all of our actions are tailored to further support a system that exploits all of us and wastes our lives in the process. Website666.com endeavors to explain how. Shape-shifting lizards aren't running the world, but they might as well be. Only a sociopath would think they deserve to run things.
